Musician, Performing Experience
“I continue to actively play both in the studio and live. As a musician, producer and engineer I have 35 + years experience crafting and later (now that we're working in the computer) "tweezing" recorded music. I have played guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and sang on countless recordings with production experience including arrangement, writing and remix / song structure
The experience of having some of my own production work become a tiny piece of American culture and then having my children grow up to realize this has been really cool. I enjoy nothing more than attempting to dissect my own process (as well as others) and share this with my students
As an educator I continually stress the importance of today’s engineer / producers becoming “well rounded” complete musicians as well. In this day and age where “everybody” can make a record on their own it is education, theory, production and diverse skill-sets above and beyond the average that will give our students the professional edge”

Special semester focuses - coordinated as co-chair of Studio Production
With these we coordinated content across the major, including students in special projects and with master class guests related to each "semester focus". These often resulted in permanent master class teacher hires and some "focuses" evolved into permanent curriculum
- Acoustics and Studio Design Focus-
Special guest acoustician Laurence Swist of LP Swist Associates. We organized a benefit concert with Regina Spektor at the PAC through Red Lotus Productions to raise funds for and built acoustic treatments for “Studio A”, with design services donated by Larry Swist
As a result we have added "Acoustics" to our curriculum this fall
- Electronic Components and Wiring Focus (project based)-
Each student taught basic wiring and electronic componentry, students in these classes actually build a working circuit or project
This has become a part of our master classes now too
- Live Sound Focus
Students interested in live sound and concert production explore and learn about modern sound reinforcement techniques and the theory behind them. This focus included guest lecturers as well as field visits and hands-on at the Student Center as well as the Performing Arts Center
As a result we have added live sound master classes to our curriculum
- Game Sound Development Focus
Students explore the game sound industry with research into job tracks and skill-sets required for engineering and composing in the game industry
- Surround Mixing
Guest Roger Glover of Deep Purple visited and gave us an 18 minute piece of electronic music that he wrote for students to learn experimental surround mixing
- The Great Suny Purchase Mic Preamp Challenge
A microphone preamp sound and selection focus, this also involved Professors Jonathan Jetter and Phil Moffa, informal guests from Guitar Center and Ben Scheuer of Studio 875. A thorough electronics comparison/analysis was organized and carried out. The entire Studio Production student body compared and tallied results that were posted on the (now defunct) Studio Production website

- Streaming classes
Experimentation with streaming technologies along with professor Silas Brown has led to streaming presentations including early on; Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) live from 0001 and a Live From Studio A event featuring comp students, more recently we streamed the Purchase Opera and the Purchase Symphony Orchestra as well as the Purchase Orchestra Electric and more! YouTube archives for many of these are here. In each case the discipline of broadcast production for music is explored, students experience real “time-crunch” deadline work. These events serve well in prototyping future streaming curriculum

Champion fundraising and redesign for Yellow room, Blue, Wonderland and 3rd floor live room studios '09/'10
- Donated time to re-wire, acoustics work included as curriculum element allowing students a “before and after” view of work being done.
Bright family donation 100k cash plus more "in kind" / Summer 2009 – altogether approx. 300k value
- To facilitate the Bright donation (and as a condition of Purchase actually getting it) I donated approx. 18 weeks of consulting in May through September ’09, (prior to my full-time employment at Purchase). This for the re-design, repair and renovating of Purchase Studios. Using the Bright donation as a “buzz-builder” I was able to secure additional donations (in the form of services, loan of equipment etc.) to complete older acoustics projects and facility improvements. This also spilled over into several smart classrooms / teaching studios, Recital Hall as well.
- The Bright donation was $100,000, additional donations in kind and cash of theatrical rigging, acoustics consultation, cabinetry, design etc. total likely another $135,000 (at least). Summer 2010 also completed several projects initially funded by the Regina Spektor benefit (which Red Lotus Productions organized) that had stalled due to a lack of additional funding.
I placed on loan to Purchase Studios and classrooms at this point (from personal resources) approximately $70,000 in additional software & equipment.
Highlights of Summer ‘09” donated studio upgrade included;
- A new API 1608 console for “Studio A”, Digidesign ICON C24 controller for “Blue”, improved audio monitors and monitor system controllers all around, new microphone preamplifiers from API, Vintech (Neve), analog outboard gear from Purple Audio and Empirical Labs etc., new cue systems all around, many acoustics and cosmetic upgrades, also ProTools 8 and 3rd party software updates in many of the studios including Waves Mercury in “Blue”, new couches and lighting, wood flooring for our live room, and the list goes on…...
Set-up a new scholarship opportunity -
- The Bright donation upgrades included installation of an API 1608 console, with this Purchase students became eligible to apply for the “API Visionary Award” scholarship program. Jacob Rosse (production major) awarded in summer ‘10, (see http://www.apiaudio.com/nw_3040.html for the API press release).
Summer 2010 lab upgrades, design and installation donations -
- The momentum from the Bright donation continued through summer 2010, I continued to donate time and materials to clear out old rooms & labs which had fallen into dis-repair, we brought several more (much needed) facilities on-line for fall 2010. It is difficult to quantify what this additional donation of professional time is worth ultimately.
